Parents try to bring daughter home from Syria

The devastated parents of a young Sydney woman who ran away to Syria have gone to the Middle East to bring their daughter home.

Hodan Abby, 18, and 20-year-old friend Hafsa Mohamed told their parents they were going on holiday last month before skipping the country and crossing the Turkish border into Syria with plans to offer themselves as jihadi brides.

The Daily Mail reports that Ms Abby's father was in the Middle East on a frantic search to find his daughter.

His wife had travelled with him but had since returned home.

Her friend Ms Mohamed reportedly said she longed to be a martyr.

Last month, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop expressed concern about young Australian women travelling to the Middle East to fight with Islamic extremists.

"They are seemingly young Australians who think they are going off on an adventure - well they're not," Ms Bishop said.

"They're joining terrorist organisations that are carrying out shockingly brutal attacks."
