DFES honours volunteers, supporters

The region's volunteer bushfire and emergency service workers and the businesses that support them were honoured by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services this week.

The DFES recognition awards were held at the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River council chambers on Wednesday, with the Shire taking out a gold category award for supporting employees who also volunteer in emergency situations.

Ranger Alison Scott and Recreation Centre lifeguard Rebecca Lickel were acknowledged for their bushfire and State Emergency Service roles.

The Shire's chief bushfire control officer Dave Holland and deputy Brett Trunfull were also singled out for awards as self-employed business men who made personal sacrifices to serve in the region's bushfire-fighting brigades.

Mr Holland said the work of volunteers was crucial and businesses supporting them were greatly appreciated.

"I want to acknowledge the dedication and contribution that employers make by letting employees leave work without penalty to support the work of emergency services," he said.

Deputy commissioner Lloyd Bailey addressed attendees, lauding the flexible workplaces that allowed the region's volunteer emergency crews to be staffed. "The generosity and willingness of businesses who support their staff, as well as that of self-employed volunteers who may be required to close their businesses, significantly contributes to the delivery of vital emergency services to the community," he said.

Businesses Cullen Wines and Margaret River Chalets were also acknowledged at the ceremony.
