The Department of Parks and Wildlife has warned people against crossing the Penguin Island sandbar this summer.

DPaW has teamed up with Surf Life Saving WA to advise people to use the ferry service between Penguin Island and Mersey Point.

SLSWA communications and partnerships officer Kristy Petrides said daily patrols of the sandbar would run until the end of January and on public holidays thereafter.

DPaW regional manager Stefan de Haan said it was important people visiting Penguin Island were aware of the dangers of crossing the sandbar and did not unnecessarily put themselves in risky situations.

He said the department regularly closed the sandbar when forecast weather, tide, surge and sea conditions posed a risk to people but admitted some water users ignored the closures.

“People with local knowledge are seen using the sandbar but it can be risky and provide a false sense of security for people not familiar with the area,” Mr de Haan said.

This season, he said the department would trial a ridged inflatable vessel which could be used for rescues if required.
