Testing conditions challenge racers

Luke Banham outsprints Mikey Hoskens to win A grade.

The criterium season kicked off last Sunday in Rockingham.

The south westerly was going to make things challenging and racing towards the finish line, riders turned into a strong headwind, which made it a difficult day for the breakaway and racers who liked attacking early.

The juniors had a number of A and B-graders riding with them.

Josh Asthon took the win from Samuel Ashton.

E-grade rode to script, with most of the bunch staying together until the final lap. In the sprint to the line John Chamlers was first with Simon Stolton second and Baden Grey third.

In D-grade, Richard Ramos took the win from Harry Postma second and Tom Power third.

C-grade was a much more aggressive race, the main protagonist being Jordan Dawson, attacking early and often to take the win.

In B-grade, the attacks were quickly nullified.

Liam Magowan attacked early only to get swamped with Nigel Stella taking the win, Kurt Harmer second, Stephen Leahy third and Magowan fourth.

An attack in the first few minutes of A-grade resulted in Luke Baham and Mikey Hosken getting away.

After almost 40 minutes, Ryan Wilmott lept across the break for the final lap to lead out KD Cycles teammate Baham for the win, with Avanti Plus's Hosken second and Wilmott third.
