Car yard bonanza

Cars are at their cheapest since a generation of Australians went to the beach in their Sandman.

Price competition across car yards as they struggle to entice customers and a gradual increase in wages means car affordability is at its best level since 1976.

Figures compiled by CommSec show someone earning the average wage has to work 25.4 weeks to buy a Ford Falcon XT auto sedan. Four years ago it would have taken 32 weeks, while in the mid-1990s it took almost 45 weeks.

Despite this, car sales in WA and across the country continue to edge down, although sales of SUVs are buoyant. Cheaper prices for high-end imports have also made them more popular.
