Grant set to become NSW deputy premier

Nationals MP Troy Grant is expected to become the new deputy premier of NSW on Thursday after receiving the backing of colleague Adrian Piccoli.

The NSW Nationals are due to elect a new leader on Thursday morning following Andrew Stoner's decision to step down from the role for family reasons.

Mr Piccoli and Hospitality Minister Mr Grant were considered the main contenders for the position.

However Mr Piccoli said he wouldn't be running.

"I will not be nominating for the position of Leader of the NSW Nationals," he said in a statement on Wednesday night.

"I will be supporting Troy Grant, Member for Dubbo, who will make a great leader of the NSW Nationals.

"I look forward to continuing as Deputy Leader of the NSW Nationals and Minister for Education."

Mr Grant, who entered parliament in 2011, is a former police officer with more than two decades of service with the force.
