Scene set for internationals

The renovated 50m pool at the South West Sports Centre has the capacity to hold international water polo and underwater hockey competitions.

The old pool’s vinyl liner was replaced with tiling and the pool has also been marked with water polo and underwater hockey pitches.

Mayor Gary Brennan said the pitches meet international standards and the city could host future events.

“What that means is that in addition to our community having a far greater range of uses of the pool we can attract those State and national, and hopefully international, events to Bunbury, ” he said.

The pool, which reopened on Sunday, is used by a number of groups and for swimming lessons.

Hundreds of school children from across the region use the pool all-year-round as part of the Education Department’s VacSwim lessons. Brenda Lee, who manages all VacSwim at the South West Sports Centre, said the newly completed upgrades would help to improve the swimming lessons.

“We now have the ability to teach this life skill to Bunbury children through the Education Department’s in-term swimming and vacational swimming program, ” she said.
