Sign up and keep cool

There was a big turnout at Karratha Water Polo Association's second Come and Try Day at the Leisureplex over the weekend, with men and women of all skill levels being encouraged to give the sport a go.

After an initial successful Come and Try Session on August 24, the session on Sunday ran through the basics of the game for newcomers and put on some short display games.

KWPA spokesman Dan Pederson said it was great to see a large cross- section of the community at Come and Try Day.

"We had everyone from FIFO workers to families come down to have a go, many of which had never played water polo in their lives," he said.

"We're trying to blow away that myth that water polo is a really physical contact sport - we've got folks ranging from late 50s right through to late teens at various levels of fitness.

"Water polo is a great way to keep cool in the summer months and if you are new in town, it gives you the chance to meet a whole new group of people."

The KWPA formed two teams last year - the Pilbara Pirates and Burrup Barracudas, each with a men's and women's side.

This year, a third men's team, the Karratha Krakens, will join the competition.

Senior games start on September 4 from 6.15pm.

Women train on Tuesdays from 6pm, with the men at 7.15pm.
