Ratepayers association spawned after PUPP protest

It has taken just 25 days for the Karratha City Ratepayers Association to go from a new Facebook group to a formalised entity after hosting their first public meeting last week.

Spawned out of the controversy surrounding the Pilbara Underground Power Project levy, association president Dani Hage said the group would aim to give rate paying residents living in the City of Karratha a stronger voice.

"The association will help raise awareness of what is going on in the town," she said.

"It is so we don't just have these 11 people sitting there in a room making decisions we don't like.

"It will be good to be able to be involved in that now."

Nearly 50 residents turned out to the first meeting, mostly voicing concerns over the cost of living and the underground power project.

But Ms Hage said the group was not anti-council.

"I think we will be able to build good relationships with the council and people will start to get an idea of who the council are and how we can work with them," she said.

"There is a bit of a downturn so people are starting to tighten their belts and have a think about what is actually going on in their town."

The association's committee is now seeking representation from other towns in the City of Karratha.

Ms Hage said residents could express their interest through the Facebook page.
