Residents evacuated amid explosives scare

Residents have been evacuated from their homes after police discovered explosives in the front yard of a suburban house.

Offices were called to the house in Wortley Street, Somerville, at 4.20pm today.

Local police liaised with the Tactical Response Group - Bomb Response Unit to determine that the items were sticks of Gelignite.

A police spokesman said: "At this time it appears they are old and unstable and we will need specialist equipment to render them safe or move them.

"Officers from the TRG Bomb Response Unit will be attending overnight. A safety cordon will remain in place."

A cordon has been established around the house and some nearby residents have been evacuated from their homes. The corner of Wortley Street and Gatacre Drive has been closed.
