Ex-NSW AG Smith to retire from politics

Former NSW attorney-general Greg Smith will retire from politics at the March 2015 state election.

Mr Smith was booted from cabinet in April in a reshuffle after then-premier Barry O'Farrell stepped down for misleading the state's corruption watchdog.

Mr Smith says "after careful consideration and discussions" with his family, he's decided not to stand for the seat of Epping.

"It is my intention to return to legal practice after the 2015 elections," the Senior Counsel said in a statement.

"I am announcing my decision now so that those branch members will be able to exercise their democratic right to participate in a preselection ballot to choose my replacement."

Mr Smith has held the seat of Epping, in Sydney's northwest, since 2007.

The 66-year-old was attorney-general and justice minister for more than three years before being replaced by former planning minister Brad Hazzard.

The state's controversial one-punch laws and changes to the way bail is decided were brought in under Mr Smith.
