Mid West residents shiver through coldest morning in almost a year

The Mid West experienced its coldest morning in almost a year, with the cold temperatures expected to continue into next week.

Geraldton woke up to a cold 5C this morning, while Morowa and Cunderdin in the Wheatbelt both experienced lows of 2.6C.

The coldest place in the state this morning was the small agricultural town of Gingin, 90km north of Perth, where temperatures plummeted below zero.

A low of -0.1C was recorded at Gingin Airport just before 7am – the lowest minimum since last July.

The crisp dawn conditions were caused by cold air moving up from the south and a lack of cloud cover – a combination expected to last until Tuesday morning.

“We’ve got no cloud cover and a big high-pressure system to the south-west coming over the state,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Edward Boyles said.

“We will have similar conditions over the next few nights.”

Minimums are expected to hover around 7C for the next three days, with afternoon maximums in the high-teens.
