Superstars drop in

Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School Year 2 students Jordan Atwell, Sianna Nielson, Isabelle Rodriguez, James Atwell, Owen Taylor, Alex Jackson and Michael Hensley were delighted to meet Fremantle Dockers star Hayden Ballantyne.

Football fever was running high at two Rockingham schools last week when WA’s AFL stars visited.

Lucky students at Star of the Sea Primary School brushed up on their footy skills last Tuesday when Fremantle Dockers star forward Hayden Ballantyne and teammates Zac Dawson and Brady Grey popped in for an afternoon kick-about.

Meanwhile, Warnbro Community High School Education Support Centre students discovered how tall West Coast Eagles ruckman Scott Lycett was when he showed up for a fun footy clinic on Wednesday.

Star of the Sea physical education teacher Bernardo Garrote said the AFL players spent an hour practising basic skills with three Year 2 classes to encourage young players into Auskick programs across the region.

Mr Garrote said the whole school had been excited about the players’ visit, with many already participating in grassroots training.

Principal Tim Emery said the school was committed to promoting healthy living.

WCHS ESC education assistant Jamie Gardiner said the football session with Lycett was great for students’ co-ordination and confidence.

“The session was awesome, the kids really enjoyed it — they were talking about it for the rest of the day,” he said.

“It is important for students to try something different and be involved in sport and to learn from someone who is a professional at what they do.

“They definitely benefitted from being able to see someone with the AFL calibre of Lycett in action.”

WCHS ESC associate principal Steve Smethurst said it was great to see so many students participating, having fun and learning new skills.

“I would like to thank Scott Lycett and the West Coast Eagles Football Club for providing such a professional, fun and engaging learning environment for our students,” he said.
