School holidays activity guide

Youngsters enjoy some pool action during last year’s BRAC holiday program.

The school holidays are looming, but there's no reason for parents to panic.

The Shire of Broome, Broome CIRCLE Inc and various government and non-government agencies are hosting a jam-packed itinerary of activities for youngsters of all ages.

BRAC will combine interactive indoor and outdoor events throughout the holidays.

  • Bush survival skills *


  • Monday, April 14, 11am-noon and 1pm-2pm *


Move over Bear Grylls. Youngsters will have the chance to become the next expert adventurers when they take part in the bush survival skills program.

Children will learn basic survival skills, including how to gather water, basic roping skills and basic navigation.

BRAC program development officer Mark Hubbard said the activity was a great way to educate children in a practical environment.

"This is all about developing skills," he said.

"They will need to build a shelter to protect themselves from the elements and be able to survive in the bush in the afternoon."

  • Pool and sausage sizzle days *

A family favourite. Pool days are all about fun in the water. The day will kick off with free play in the pool, supervised by BRAC's qualified school holiday program leaders and lifeguards.

This will be followed by a sausage sizzle for lunch and more play in the afternoon with the

BRAC inflatable.

  • Easter activities *


  • Thursday, April 17, 11am-noon and 1pm-2pm *


The day will begin with a spectacular Easter egg hunt around the centre. Which team will find their eggs first? Prizes will be on hand for participants.

In the afternoon, kids will have the chance to design and paint their own easter egg.

  • Movie day *


  • Wednesday, April 23, 11am-noon and 1pm-2pm, Twin Cinemas *


Staff members are inviting youngsters to enjoy a day out at the movies (film to be confirmed).

Children will need to bring morning, lunch and afternoon tea, a hat, sunscreen, bathers, towels and goggles.

Tickets cost $40 per child for part a day (8am-2.30pm) or $55 for a full day (8am-4.30pm). Bookings are required. For more information, call BRAC on 9191 8720 or email brac@broome.gov.au .

The program will be run by BRAC program development officer Mark Hubbard, BRAC assistant manager Danielle Cairns, experienced program leader Pippa Crystal and other staff.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife will team up with the Shire of Broome, Department of Fisheries, Nyamba Buru Yawuru Ltd, Mabu Yawuru Ngan-ga and the Broome Bird Observatory to deliver outdoor activities promoting the Kimberley coast, conservation and culture.

  • Gurlibil colouring comp and turtle season *

Visit the shopping centre to enter the Gurlibil (turtle) colouring competition and check out the display on results from the 2013-14 turtle nesting season for Eighty Mile Beach marine park and Cable Beach monitoring programs.

  • Sustainable fishing workshop *


  • Monday, April 14, 9.30am-11.30am, grassed area near the Department of Fisheries *


From the ocean to the lab, youngsters are invited to join in the science workshop to learn about sustainable fisheries and fishing techniques, followed by a fish dissection to explore the anatomy of a fish.

  • Mabu Yawuru Nagan-ga *

Everyone is welcome to come along and listen to Yawuru stories, enjoy art and craft activities and participate in preparing and eating traditional food.

  • Intertidal Investigators (DPaW) *


  • Thursday, April 17, 2.30pm-4pm, Entrance Point boat ramp *


Come and explore the fascinating marine life that lives on, in and near the rock pools.

A marine biologist will be on hand to help participants identify common plants and animals that live in this area and why intertidal ecosystems play an important role in the marine environment.

Children should bring along covered shoes for getting wet, sun protection and water.

  • Shopping for bush honey (Yawuru rangers, DPaW Yawuru joint management team) *


  • Wednesday, April 23, 8am-noon, Cape Leveque Road turnoff (4WD required) *


Children are invited to explore the abundance of bush food on offer in Marrul season.

The Yawuru rangers will guide youngsters around and show them the secret spots to find delicious honey.

They will also teach kids about bees and their impact on the land, plants and animals.

Participants are required to bring sun protection, water and have access to a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

  • Bush birds and bush tucker (Yawuru rangers, DPaW Yawuru joint management team) *


  • Thursday, April 24, 8am-10am, Minyirr Park Base Camp *


Join the Yawuru rangers on a discovery of bush birds living in Minyirr Park.

Learn about the local birds, what they like to eat, where they live and how the rangers are looking after their country.

Bring along sun protection and water.

  • Bird buddies *


  • April 26, 8am-9.30am, Broome Bird Observatory office *


Find out about the fascinating birds that thrive in Roebuck Bay. Learn to identify several species of birds and start your own bird list. Binoculars and telescopes will be provided. This event is suitable for kids aged six to 12 years.

Bring along water and sun protection.

  • Eighty Mile Beach events *


DPaW and the Department of Fisheries will be based at Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park in the second week of school holidays, educating visitors about the new marine park and marine wildlife.

Activities will include a marine-themed quiz night, re-use bag painting, intertidal creature creations and a presentation evening.

Budding artists and chefs will feel right at home at Broome CIRCLE with their School Holiday Stars program.

Youngsters aged six to 12 are invited to come along and get creative with local artist Chrissy Carter.

Local agencies have banded together to provide great fun for kids of all ages this Easter.

  • Collaborative school holiday program *


  • Monday April 14 to Thursday April 17 *


PCYC Broome, Save the Children, Marnja Jarndu Women's Refuge, Youth Justice, Youth Connections, Red Cross Broome and Headspace Kimberley will run the collaborative school holiday program again this Easter break from Monday to Thursday, April 14-17.

Activities will include a day at Cable Beach, sports, animal and wildlife and a family fun day.
