Driver banned for 40 years faces court

A 41-year-old serial traffic offender disqualified from driving for 40 years faced court today for getting back behind the wheel.

The single father of three was charged with driving while disqualified and giving a false name and address at a random breath test in Tempe on the 9th March.

“Where's the incentive to behave when you're disqualified for forty years?” Martyn said.

“I do abide by the law, but my friend rang me and asked him to help him out,” he said.

Martyn is facing two years behind bars, but today he was thrown a lifeline.

He will be assessed for home detention and undertake a traffic offenders program, even though he will not be able to get back behind the wheel until he is at least 81 years of age.

Martyn will be sentenced on the 17th June.

Another 76-year-old driver who has been disqualified from driving until 2090 has also been caught behind the wheel.

The man was stopped by police this morning in Alexandria after failing to indicate, and will face court in three weeks.
