Bad behaviour targeted at Pro

Margaret River Police Sergeant Brett Cassidy has asked people to use their heads during the Margaret River Pro.

Sgt Cassidy said police would be out in force and take a no-tolerance approach to bad behaviour this week.

“A reminder to those people out walking, don’t street drink, ” he said.

“It’s an on-the-spot $200 fine and I will be instructing staff to enforce it.

“When people leave their empty containers lying around, it looks untidy.”

Sgt Cassidy said he had made hospitality operators aware police would be on top of alcohol sales to drunk patrons.

“We will be right on top of the pubs to make sure that doesn’t happen, ” he said.

Settlers Tavern proprietor Rob Gough said staff had worked very well with the police for the past 10 years of the Pro.

Mr Gough said he was not worried about the crowds.

“The last couple of years the crowd has been very well behaved, ” he said.

“We are more worried about providing a great experience for people visiting Margaret River.

“We are fully prepared. We have extra staff.

“We’ll be stepping it up and we are really looking forward to it.”

Knights Inn assistant manager Colin Nairn said rowdy punters wouldn’t be an issue.

Mr Nairn said accommodation at the inn was nearly booked out.

Sgt Cassidy asked for people to use the daily shuttles.

“We encourage people to try to take that form of transport instead of driving, ” he said.

“Parking will be at a premium and the service is free for everyone.”
