Pets can be for Christmas: RSPCA

The RSPCA has changed its mind and is now recommending pets as Christmas gifts, albeit in the form of a voucher.

For years the organisation has pushed the message of not giving pets for Christmas because so many become unwanted strays overflowing animal shelters in the New Year.

Now, after analysing the figures, the RSPCA is sending out a new tune.

“We can’t see any trends that say there is an increase in surrenders or dumpings after Christmas, surrenders are an all-year-round issue,” Kerriann Campbell from the RSPCA said.

Christmas is now considered the perfect time to welcome a four-legged friend to the family -particularly one seeking a second chance.

“Families are home for the Christmas and New Year period, it’s a great time to settle a pet into your home,” Ms Campbell said.

It is even promoting gift vouchers for someone who wants to choose the responsible adoption option.

“Here at the RSPCA we desex, microchip and vaccinate all our animals,” Ms Campbell said.
