Carnarvon students sing from the heart

Eight Carnarvon Community College students have given the performance of a lifetime, singing in front of 900 people at Government House.

The year eight and nine students were selected by Eastern States organisation Girls from Oz to undertake the whirlwind tour last month.

They were chosen because of their willingness to engage with the program and its key messages, like wanting to see the wider world and consider what aspirations they might have within it.

Accordingly, the tour saw the girls not only perform at Government House and St Hilda’s Art Theatre, but also visit the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the University of Western Australia.

The girls also were able to sing on Noongar Radio, with songs including well- known hit We Are Family.

For their performances, they were joined by 40 top singers from Eastern States capital cities.

Girls from Oz program director Kylie-Lee Archer said the performances blew her away.

“I couldn’t have felt more proud of the girls and of the success of our partnership if I tried,” she said.

“They grew so much in confidence as performers, and in their interpersonal interactions — they tried things they’d never tried before and overcome their fears. “While the girls had experienced incremental confidence changes throughout the week, the most extraordinary transformation seemed to take place after the matinee and before the evening concert at Government House.

“They were very excited back- stage, expressing their desire to give their best performance yet.

“After they took their bow they exited the stage squealing and hugging each other — it was extraordinary to witness.”

Girls From Oz started visiting Carnarvon at the start of the year, the second Western Australian location after starting their works in the state in Halls Creek.

Coaches and program directors have paid four visits to Carnarvon since the start of the year, with Lotterywest funding to continue visiting Carnarvon lasting until the end of next year.
