Scooter alarm bid to bolster security

Police are handing out hundreds of free scooter alarms today in a bid to raise awareness about vehicle security.

A police spokesman said motorcycle and scooter thefts "significantly contributed" to the rise in stolen vehicles in WA last financial year.

More than 8485 vehicles were stolen in the 2012-13 financial year, including 901 motorcycles and 1263 scooters.

In the 2011-12 financial year, 594 motorcycles and 868 scooters were stolen in WA.

To get a free alarm, drivers must show their license and prove that their scooter is registered.

They will also be asked to participate in a short survey and provide their details for future research on the devices.

The alarms are being installed at Bunnings stores across Perth.
