Church same-sex bid refused

A proposal to recognise same-sex relationships within the Anglican diocese of Perth has been laid to rest after the Church's Provincial Council of WA last week voted unanimously against it.

The motion, which was backed by two-thirds of the Church's synod last month, was referred to the council after Archbishop Roger Herft vetoed it for the second time in two years.

Archbishop Herft said he believed the move could have "unintended consequences".

He also opposed the motion because there was no legislation at the Federal or State level which establishes same-sex civil unions.

In a statement, Provincial Secretary Brian Dixon said the decision was based on the opinion that the resolution passed by the diocese of Perth could be interpreted as being contrary to the fundamental declarations and ruling principles of the Anglican Church of Australia.
