Celebs go girly for Flemington Oaks Day

Florals, lace and prints are ruling fashions at Flemington as thousands of ladies flaunt classical femininity on Oaks Day, giving plenty of competition for supermodel Coco Rocha.

Two days after bold colours and flamboyant outfits ruled track-side style on Melbourne Cup day, lady racegoers have pared down the extravagance with classical feminine racewear.

There was plenty of lace, florals, pretty prints and beading track side on Oaks Day, traditionally known as ladies day.

A stunning Rocha turned heads in a spectacular gold, lace peplum couture piece from Melbourne designer Anthony Capon, who was a Fashions on the Field finalist earlier this week.

"Why not wear one of the pieces that was here - I mean this is where it's meant to be worn, so I thought let's do it!" Rocha told AAP.

The Canadian beauty revealed she wanted to amp up her outfit after seeing so many glamorous women on Cup day.

"The first day when I came here I was like, wow, I have to step it up, these girls know what they are doing.

"Especially for ladies day, I wanted something that was just out there - like an art piece," Rocha said.

Rocha will be judging Fashions on the Field on Oaks Day and said she won't be looking for any particular trend.

"It's really what you love and what you feel comfortable in wearing," she said.

Rocha said she loves learning the story behind an outfit.

"That's what's amazing about today, especially because these women have been making these dresses for quite some time."

Oaks Day is the big day for national Fashions On The Field finalists, who will be vying for the grand prize of a $75,459 Lexus sports car.

Entrant Alice Bright from Melbourne pulled together her top-to-toe canary yellow outfit, a peplum top and pencil skirt, in two weeks by hand.

"I put a lot of heart into it," she told AAP. "It represents me - which I am very happy about."

Bright said she was feeling plenty of competition from other fashionable ladies.

"I feel good, but I look around and see all the other amazing outfits, I feel a bit stunned!"

Anna Chalko, also from Melbourne, was surprised when she was pulled aside by Fashions On The Field judges who were so impressed by her outfit, they asked her to enter the daily competition.

She wore a vintage dress from Los Angeles, and a hat from her mum's closet.

"I was really surprised and flattered. I just thought it would be a little bit of fun," she told AAP.

"It's so lovely to be surrounded by so many stunning women and fantastic outfits."

TV personality Giaan Rooney said Oaks Day was a special day for women fashion enthusiasts.

"Everyone looks amazing. I love (Oaks Day) because it's very feminine, very soft, beautiful - lots of colour.

"I think that suits the feminine form the best, so I love the way women really go all out on Oaks Day, it's beautiful."
