Shark-bite victim is not fussed

A 60-year-old Exmouth woman who was bitten by a shark at Turquoise Bay has told friends and family she does not know what all the fuss is about.

Glenda Simmons was snorkelling in the bay's drift loop with her husband George on Monday afternoon when a 1m black-tipped reef shark bit her right arm about 40m from shore.

Mr Simmons wrote on Facebook that his wife was having her first snorkel in more than seven years at the time.

"And you would not believe it, a shark came in without warning and bit her on the arm," Mr Simmons said.

"Bad injury to the arm, broken and dislocated wrist but she is OK."

Fisheries' shark response unit manager Lisa Clack said the reef shark had shown aggression towards Mr Simmons before attacking his wife.

Mrs Simmons was assessed by doctors at Exmouth Hospital before she was flown on Monday night to Perth and transferred to Royal Perth Hospital.

A friend who visited Mrs Simmons in hospital wrote online that she "did not know what the fuss was about and seems to be doing well".

Turquoise Bay was closed to the public yesterday and is expected to reopen today.
