Richie Benaud injured in car crash

Australian cricket legend Richie Benaud is in a stable condition in Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital after being injured in a car accident this morning.

Channel Nine tweeted that Benaud, 83, has chest and shoulder injuries.

He is in good spirits despite the injuries.

In a statement Channel Nine said Benaud was expected to stay in hospital for a few days.

"Mr Benaud, who turned 83 earlier this month, was driving home alone to Coogee mid-morning yesterday when the accident happened," the statement said.

"Police attended and there were no charges. The car had mounted a nature strip and hit a small brick wall.

"Despite being in some discomfort, the former Australian cricket captain and legendary all-rounder remains in fine spirits and good humour."

Benaud’s wife Daphne told Fairfax he was in better spirits after initially being shaken by the accident.

"Richie’s remarkable," Mrs Benaud said. "At first I was quite concerned but today he’s looking unbelievably well."

In a statment, Benaud said: “No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself.
