Tan lifts China to first gold at worlds

Wroclaw (Poland) (AFP) - Tan Yayun gave China their first gold of the world weightlifting championships on Sunday, winning the women?s under 48kg category.

The Chinese lifter managed 84kg in the snatch, and then lifted 115kg in the clean and jerk to end the competition with a total of 199kg.

Olympic bronze medallist Ryang Chun Hwa of North Korea took silver with 186kg (81/105) and Mexican Carolina Valencia Hernandez third, 181kg (78/103).

China are looking to consolidate their status as favourites after winning five gold medals at the 2012 Olympics and four titles at the last worlds.

But the Chinese must be wary of the Russians who are gunning for a title after going home without an Olympic gold and the Kazakhs -- winners of two gold medals at the 2011 worlds and four Olympic titles.
