Cool addition to Cygnet Park

Recreational activity can be thirsty work, but a group of Broome students are helping Roebuck Estate residents stay cool after lobbying the Shire of Broome for a drink fountain in their local park.

The Roebuck Primary School students proudly showcased the new feature at Cygnet Park on Sanderling Drive last month after sending a request to council to install a fountain in the area.

The students, who are part of the school's community and environmental group, came up with the plan as part of their assignment to generate potential ideas and projects in the community.

Principal Barbara Gould said the group agreed on a fountain for the park because it was regularly used by students and families.

After conducting surveys, collecting data and receiving unanimous support from their classmates, the group submitted a letter to the Shire.

The fountain was installed a few weeks ago, complete with a new park bench.

The students said they were delighted with the stylish, modern-looking structure and agreed it was the "coolest" drink fountain in town.

Ms Gould said the project was a great way to ensure students had a voice in the community and take the initiative to tackle issues they had identified.

Broome Shire councillor Jenny Bloom said the council was impressed by the students' proactive approach to addressing community needs, and said it was important for youths to be included and remain actively involved in decisions regarding the town's future.
