Rain postpones Belmont race meeting

Rain postpones Belmont race meeting

Today's Belmont Park race meeting has been abandoned after heavy overnight rain waterlogged the track and stewards ruled if was unsafe for racing.

Racing and Wagering WA chairman of thoroughbred stewards Brad Lewis said the course had considerable surface water.

"Our inspection team didn't hesitate when calling off today's meeting," Lewis said. "The track is absolutely unsafe for racing.

"We walked the track soon after 7am and knew today's races couldn't go ahead.

Mr Lewis said the abandonment decision was confirmed when he received a forecast of more rain today.

He said more races will be added to next week's meeting at Belmont to cater for many of the horses which were due to race today.

"There's no race meeting at Belmont next Saturday, due to it being Kalgoorlie Cup day. Belmont will conduct a Sunday racing fixture on the day after the cup," he said.

"Barrier trials due to be run at Belmont on Monday have at this stage been postponed to Tuesday".

Mr Lewis said an announcement on whether Tuesday's trials will go ahead will be made on Monday at noon.

"If the track remains unsafe, the trials will also be abandoned," he said.
