Boston driver survives horrific crash
A Boston truck driver has survived a horrific crash after his vehicle was hit by an allegedly drunk driver.
Paul J. Healy Jr., 35, was driving a newspaper delivery van northbound on the Interstate 93, a Boston highway, when a vehicle reportedly struck his truck.
Healy's truck was forced over the guard rails and landed on the exit ramp more than twelve metres below.
According to The Boston Globe, the newspaper Healy had been delivering at the time of the accident, he was in a stable condition in hospital despite suffering multiple injuries including fractured ribs, a fractured vertebrae, a bruised kidney, and several lacerations.
“He thought he was not going to survive once he saw himself going over the guardrail,” Healy’s mother Jacqueline Elinoff told The Globe.
Healy has been delivering The Globe newspapers for over thirteen years.
His father is also said to have worked for the company.
“He told me that his father, who also drove a truck for the Globe, was on his shoulder looking out for him,” said Michael Halley, a colleague of Healy's.
The twenty-five-year-old driver of the car that struck Healy, Vivencia Bellegarde, has been arrested and charged by police.
“She initially denied being the operator of the vehicle,” a spokesperson for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley told The Globe.
Bellegarde reportedly refused a breath test after the crash and has prior drunk driving convictions.
