Pele to sell strands of hair for incredible sum of money

Historically bestowing someone with a lock of hair is a declaration of love and devotion.

If that is the case then Pele is about declare his love and devotion to 1,283 lucky fans – and all for the tidy sum of $7,500 (£4,473), you see.

In one of the slightly odder stories you will read this World Cup year – and you’ll read a few – Pele has revealed that 1,283 fans will have the opportunity to purchase a strand of the great man’s hair.

“$7,500 for a strand of hair, an outrage!” I hear thee cry; well that’s not the full story.

The 73-year-old’s luscious follicles will be fashioned into diamonds and sold in a gold-plated box embossed with Pele during his playing days.

Pele aficionados will know the significance of the 1,283 strands of hair but, for the rest of us mere mortals, 1,283 is the number of goals that the Brazil superstar scored in his illustrious career.

What do you make of all this? Is it a rare opportunity for Pele superfans to own the ultimate Pele souvenir or just a cynical marketing ploy?
