Team abandons MKR competition due to sudden illness

Victorian couple Kelly and Ash, one of the favourite teams to win My Kitchen Rules, have taken the painful decision to leave the competition due to a sudden medical condition which has caused Kelly to rapidly lose sight in her right eye.

“It’s something called optic neuritis: the optic nerve that connects your eye to your brain is damaged in some sort of way,” a teary Kelly explained. “Which means my eyesight is not there at the moment.”

Judge Pete Evans was in charge of breaking the bad news to the other contestants during yesterday’s heartbreaking episode.

“We’ve learned heaps and met some great people,” Ash, who’s been married to Kelly for three years, said. “We set out on this adventure to win... And it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.”

When they entered the competition, Kelly and Ash revealed their plan to open a restaurant/bar in Melbourne with “a constantly evolving menu with loads of wine and great music.”

“I would never do this with anyone else, and I’m really proud of what’ve done together,” Kelly said of her experience on My Kitchen Rules next to Ash.

“It’s such a shame that you have to leave in this manner,” Pete said. “You are great competitors, we’ve both loved having you in the competition and you’ve amazed us with your beautiful cooking skills, and the respect you show for the other teams.”

“Peter and I are always going to be there for you for any help whatsoever,” judge Manu Feildel continued. “So be strong, do what you have to do and do it well.”

After saying goodbye to all their fellow competitors, the Victorian team left My Kitchen Rules for good.

“You can tell how devastated everyone is to see Kelly and Ash go,” Pete said. “It’s a sad day.”
