Unborn baby killed in car plunge

An unborn baby has been killed after a woman lost control of her car and plunged into the Barwon River at Fyansford near Geelong.

She managed to escape from the car while it was sinking into the river on Friday night.

The woman, who was 30 weeks pregnant, was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital suffering internal and head injuries, and her baby was pronounced dead later after she was transferred to the Royal Women's Hospital.

She lost control of her car and struck a guard rail while driving on the Geelong ring road, becoming airborne and crashing into the river.

Victoria's road toll now stands at 67, one less than the same time last year.
