Man finds old lottery ticket in tax files, cashes it for $9 million

An amazing story of luck and fortune has emerged from old tax files in Chicago.

A retired truck driver stumbled upon a forgotten lottery ticket while preparing his tax returns - and cashed it in for a $9 million prize.

What’s more, the year-old ticket was about to expire few hours later that day.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Irvin Przyborski, 61, bought a ticket a year ago and inadvertently slipped it into a folder with his tax documents.

It was when he sat down to sort his taxes for this year, he found it, checked the numbers and discovered it was worth $9 million.

However, Przyborski remained unaffected after amassing the fortune. "Look at the people who are out of work. People with Ph.Ds can't find work. There's nothing joyful about winning money in a situation like this," he was quoted as saying.

The ticket was by far the biggest unclaimed prize in state lottery history, a spokeswoman said.
