Thieves net a saucy steal

Police are looking for thieves who stole a tonne of tomatoes, from a glasshouse at Virginia overnight.

The tomatoes are valued at over $4,000 and Police have said they were carefully taken from the vines.

"Information from the owners is that the fruit has been stripped from the vines in a professional manner which hasn't damaged the vines," Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Addison said.

"It was done in such a way as to hide the theft for as long as possible, by leaving ripe fruit at the front of the vines and taking the ripe fruit from behind so that on entering the greenhouse you wouldn't have automatically noticed the theft had occurred," he said.

Police expect the thieves to sell the tomatoes on in a matter of days.

"We don't have any idea where the fruit will be going at this time, it may have been taken by other growers and certainly because the fruit is easy to be sold on, it may be sold at produce markets anywhere within the state or possibly interstate," Detective Senior Sergeant Addison said.
