Whales at Encounter Bay

Whales at Encounter Bay

The South Australian Whale Centre has reported sighting two whales near Encounter Bay this morning.

The two whales, believed to be humpback were seen travelling towards Newland head, just past the bluff after 10.30.

The pair come after a bumper weekend for whale watchers, when a Southern Right whale was seen by many, 50 metres off the shore at suburban beach Glenelg.

It was a rare moment for those down the bay, as the South Australian Whale Watch centre said it is rare for whales to come in so close to the shore, sightings like that happen about three times a year.

Whales are mainly known to visit around Victor Harbour near Encounter Bay, with the whale watching season starting in winter.

The area is a breeding ground for whales, as they head to Encounter Bay to either find a mate or give birth to calves.
