WATCH: Shocking video shows attack on Gold Coast cabbie over '$6.50 fare'

Video has captured the moment a 66-year-old Gold Coast taxi driver was attacked by a group of passengers, allegedly over a $6.50 fare.

The driver was allegedly kicked in the stomach and punched in the face during the shocking assault.

Police say the driver attempted to stop the group from running off when they allegedly attacked him.

Seven News obtained the shocking video that shows the man being attacked.

One young man depicted in the video is seen to land a left hook to the man's face, before another kicked him in the stomach.

The incident unfolded at about 8.30am on Friday morning in an Ashmore Shopping Centre carpark.

"Obviously we don't encourage our drivers to take matters into their own hands but all of our vehicles are fitted with safety equipment they have duress buttons, we've got security cameras fitted," Benjamin Lee from Gold Coast cabs said.

Police spent the day reviewing the footage taken by the security camera and are currently investigating the incident.

The taxi driver chose to finish his shift after the incident.
