'Sickening, malicious': Man jailed for bashing kangaroo to death

A man has been jailed for 11 months after bashing a kangaroo to death in WA's south.

Craig Jamie House was filmed throwing rocks at the 'roo before he bashes it with a crowbar in a dam near Bunbury.

The attack, filmed by House's friend Vance Geoffrey Jarvis, happened almost two years ago.

Both House and Jarvis appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to the 2015 attack.

House was sentenced to 11 months behind bars, while Jarvis was fined $10,000 for his involvement.

RSPCA WA chief executive David van Ooran said he was pleased with the sentences and described the attack as sickening, disturbing and malicious.

"Such crimes against animals warrant strict punishments to send a clear message to the community that cruelty towards animals is not acceptable," he said.

"We know that many West Australians feel very strongly about cruelty to animals and we believe the sentences handed down in this case are a reflection of the community's expectations regarding appropriate punishment for acts of animal cruelty.

"This decision is a good outcome for wildlife, and demonstrates that all animals deserve equal treatment and protection."
