Zara Phillips falls from horse during Gold Coast polo match

The Gold Coast's glamorous Magic Millions carnival is underway and the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillip was there to help launch the festival.

The royal even stayed graceful as she took a tumble from her horse in front of the large crowd.

Cameras captured the moment she fell from her polo horse in what first appeared to be a nasty spill.

Large gasps could be heard from a visibly nervous crowd.

The resilient royal immediately jumped up to her feet with a smile on her face and remounted the horse ready to resume playing polo.

Phillips arrived at the event alongside her husband Mike Tindal, the pair having just arrived on the Gold Coast from England.

“You guys are very lucky to have an amazing weather, amazing backdrop and to have the polo here at the same time,” she told 7 news.

“The good thing about the Polo is you can always drop in, drop out,” Tindal told 7 News.

“There's always a bar, so you can always find your way there, then when you want to get invested in the field, you can always walk back and watch that.”

The games has often been compared to hockey but on horses with fewer people.

Polo ponies can reach up to speeds of 60 kilometres an hour during tense matches.

"Main thing is concentrating on your technique and your strike, and keeping your eye on the ball,” Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne told 7 News.

The crowds at the match were quite small but in five years organisers hope to have 14,000 people watching on.
