Hoons told to 'grow up' in bad driver crackdown

NSW Police are urging hoons to “grow up” and rethink their behaviour after alarming new figures show an increase in road deaths in men and young drivers.

So far in 2016, 316 people have died on NSW roads – 29 more than this time last year.

Police have taken action in more than 100 hoon offences, 650 pursuits and 2,000 speeding offences in this year alone.

In vision released to Seven News, police say it is time for drivers to get the message that hoon behaviour will not be tolerated.

“It’s just ridiculous, stupid,” Superintendent David Driver said.

“There’s a genuine disconnect between the reality of road trauma and the people that were using those vehicles.”

Watching alarming footage of dangerous hoon behaviour, Supt Driver said it is lucky no one was killed.

“They were all laughing, they all thought it was funny,” he said.

“Someone sitting out of the window while the vehicle was being driven in that manner was ridiculously dangerous.

“They need to walk a mile in our shoes and go and deliver a death message to see the impact road trauma has.”

In vision shared by NSW Police, the first driver was sentenced in Albury court earlier this year, and copped a $3,200 fine and loss of licence for two years.

The second driver was also sentenced in Albury, and was slapped with more than $4,000 in fines plus a 14-month disqualification.
