1.5kg truffle found in Victoria is one of the world's biggest

A Victorian farmer and his trusty canine sidekick have uncovered one of the world's biggest truffles, worth an estimated $3700.

Yarra Valley Truffles owner Stuart Dunbar and his canine Lani stumbled across the whopping 1.5kg delicacy last Thursday as he attempted to protect the truffles from the 21C heat.

"The ripening aroma's being released made Lani mark the truffle enthusiastically and I/we started digging deeper and deeper," Mr Dunbar wrote in his blog.

It took 45 minutes to get the truffle out of the Woori Yallock orchard before it headed to the weigh station.

"I've had a lot of large truffles this year, many four to five hundred grams ... but this one weighed in at 1511 grams," he said.

"Being a Thursday, it was a bit late in the week for marketing and none of my regular customers could handle a truffle of this size."

Given it is one of the biggest truffle finds in the world, Mr Dunbar said he will preserve the truffle and put it on display.

"It's certainly more satisfying to be able to keep (and show) it, than simply say 'I once had a truffle that was...'," he said.
