"I was terrified. I just - I saw it coming. And it was literally - going like this - at me. And I couldn't go anywhere, there were cars either side," the stunned driver, Sarah Courtney told 7 News.

The stray piece of timber was lying on the road when the vehicle ahead of Sarah's flicked the log up, sending it spearing through her windscreen narrowly avoiding hitting the driver.

The impact caused tiny shards of glass to go flying everywhere throughout the vehicle.

"I had some in my mouth - I was crunching on the glass," Sarah told 7 News.

Her husband told 7 News he felt helpless when he received the call from his wife.

"She was just like, I'm alright, but, and I thought something's happened, yeah, car accident for sure,” he told 7 News.

"I just want to make sure that people cover their loads. It hasn't just happened to me, it's happened to others before,” Sarah told 7 News.

"I was actually thankful that the kids - no one else - was next to me in the car, because it was on the passenger side, and glass went all the way back through the car."

It’s clear that she has made a lucky escape on the busy motorway.

"When you see the photos you think holy crap! It could have been so much worse, you could be at her funeral today,” her husband, Lucus, told 7 News.

This frightening encounter can now serve as a reminder to motorists everywhere to take care when behind the wheel.
