Elderly woman fights for life after being trapped in burning bedroom

An elderly woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a dramatic rescue from her burning house in Sydney's southwest.

The 73-year-old woman was treated at the scene then taken to Liverpool hospital in a critical condition after becoming trapped in her bedroom in a Milperra home on Friday evening.

The home, at Bullecourt Avenue, was well alight when fire fighters arrived at at 6.30pm.

Fire crews were met with a degree of difficulty and risk to free the woman, as vehicles and other obstacles blocked the front yard.

"The smoke was right down to the floor so trying to conduct search and rescue in those conditions was challenging,” NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector Trent Lawrence said.

“We were able to find the woman quite quickly.”

Police say the blaze is not being treated as suspicious.


In nearby Emu Plains, a fire turned fatal when an arson attack at O'Donoghue's Irish Pub morning claimed the life of a 29-year-old man.

He died in hospital at about 9pm on Friday night after suffering significant burns to his body from the blaze at the pub on the Great Western Highway, which broke out about 1.45 that morning.

A 30-year-old man was treated for serious burns to his legs and remains in hospital.

Police found the men near the pub after they received a report about the fire.

The blaze was contained to a cool room where an accelerant, believed to be petrol, was suspected as the cause, police say.

The pub was closed at the time of the incident.

Police are treating the blaze as suspicious and investigations are underway.
