Alcoholic jailed over carjacking claims 'can't remember' it

An alcoholic who claims he cannot remember carjacking and assaulting an elderly driver in Adelaide, has been jailed for at least two years.

The District Court heard Zac Baby Chol had a long criminal history and had been banned from driving at the time of the shocking crime.

Sickening pictures obtained by 7 News show the victim, Bill Bakow, being thrown from his Camry outside Ridleyton FoodLand last November.

The heavily drunk carjacker then tried to drag him across the bitumen, before almost 'running over' him in the car

The 78-year-old suffered wounds to his face and back, and said he continues to experience psychological trauma.

Chol was arrested soon after the incident and allegedly spat at police who detained him.

On Tuesday, the 34-year-old was jailed for three-years and four months, but could be out in two.

The court heard he was already banned from driving and had breached a bond.

Judge Peter Brebner said Chol suffered a deprived, dysfunctional and violent childhood amid civil war in north Sudan but that his offending was 'particularly repugnant'.

After a relationship breakdown in his 20s, Chol became a jobless, homeless alcoholic.

He has since said he will never drink again.

He has again been indefinitely banned from driving.
