WA rallies to help south west icon beat cancer

It's not every day a traffic controller becomes a local legend, but that is exactly what has happened with a man known as John in Western Australia's south.

Over the years his friendly and passionate approach to his job has turned him into a much loved figure among those who travel the roads in the state's south west.

But after a car accident left the smiling worker in hospital, doctors found he was also suffering from an aggressive form of cancer which could cost him a kidney, or worse.

Upon learning of his predicament, locals rallied to help raise funds to pay for his treatment. In less than a week $5000 was gathered to help John beat cancer.

Without help, he faces the prospect of having to mortgage his home to cover the costs of his treatment.

But John remains characteristically upbeat in the face of the the oncoming ordeal.

"If it's gone too far, into the kidneys, I may lose a kidney," he told GWN 7 News.

"But I've got a spare one, so I'm lucky. How good is that?"
