School fire being treated as suspicious

Police are treating a blaze at a primary school on Sydney's northern beaches as suspicious.

The fire at Seaforth Public School, on Kempbridge Avenue, Seaforth destroyed five classrooms and a storage shed.

The school is closed and is being treated as a crime scene.

Residents noticed a small fire about 10pm at the school and called the fire brigade, but not before much of the school was engulfed by flames.

School principal Bernard Cheng told 7 News the fire has affected students in Year 2 and 3 and that their projects and art work was destroyed.

The school was closed today due to asbestos fears.

A NSW Police spokesman said: "Police from Northern Beaches Local Area Command attended and assisted Fire & Rescue NSW as they extinguished the blaze."

There were no reports of injuries and a crime scene has been established as investigators try to determine the cause of the fire.

Inquiries are continuing.
