Man with broken leg rescued from Uluru after a freezing night alone

A man has spent the night trapped in a crevasse on Uluru after separating from his group.

Police, Territory Response Group and Northern Territory Emergency Service members were called to the landmark after a 27-year-old man was reported missing at about 6pm yesterday.

He was found trapped in a crevasse with a broken leg, however, poor light meant a rescue had to be delayed until the morning.

The man was reportedly climbing the rock with two women aged 23 and 27 when he decided to take an alternative route to the bottom.

When he failed to meet the women at the foot of Uluru, they alerted police.

An aerial search located the man shortly afterwards, according to a police spokesperson.

“Due to poor light the rescue could only commence in the morning. Police members, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park staff and the two women stayed in contact with the man overnight,” the spokesperson said.

“Efforts by all agencies and Parks Australia today have focussed on bringing the man up to the surface safely.”

Rescue workers stayed in contact with the man as he braved a cold night wearing only shorts and a t-shirt, before bringing him to safety and medical attention earlier today.
