Little girl's brave recovery after being hit by car

A little girl who was hit by a car outside her school in Brisbane is now out of a coma.

Sienna McColl ran onto the road as her mother arrived to pick her up from Sunnybank Hills State School two weeks ago.

The seven-year-old, who was clipped by the car’s side mirror, sustained horrific brain injuries.

She was rushed to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and placed in a coma.

Her father Shane McColl says it was incredibly traumatic.

"To see your little girl like that and you can't do anything, you know it breaks your heart all you want to do is swap places with her,” he told 7News.

Sienna is now in a rehabilitation unit, where she is learning how to breathe, speak and walk again.

Doctor Kim McLennan, a rehabilitation specialist at the hospital, says Sienna’s recovery process could take years.

"She's had a severe injury and the rehab phase will be quite long for her,” she said.

"Often it's a hidden disability, often children will make a good recovery physically but there can be ongoing issues that need support.”

Sienna’s family now want to help raise awareness about brain injuries.

"If this can help her in any way or help any other family going through this that's what we want to do," Mr McColl said.

Details of her progress are being sent to researchers overseas.

A fundraising page has also been set up to help Sienna and her family.
