Triple-0 hero helps Dad deliver baby at home

A Queensland couple have praised a Triple-0 operator who helped them deliver their baby over the phone.

Duane Dredge and Christie Carr, from Bundaberg, had just returned from hospital when Christie went into labor.

The young mother knew they would not make it to the emergency room in time.

“Duane was adamant that he was going to drive me to the hospital and we'd make it but I thought and knew different,” Chrisite told 7News.

Instead, Duane dialled Triple-0.

His call was taken by Erica Bolam, an experienced operator with the Sunshine Coast Ambulance Service.

Audio recordings show how she was able to keep the young couple calm.

“Is that another contraction happening now?” Ms Bolam can be heard asking.

“Ok. Just take slow deep breaths between each contraction.”

Fifteen minutes later, Christie gave birth to a healthy little girl, Sophia.

Erica Bolam met Sophia for the first time on Thursday.

Ms Bolam visited the young family on Thursday and met the newborn whom she helped deliver.

“I think you just go into the mode that you're trained to go into and just follow the instructions,” she said.

Duane said they are incredibly grateful for Ms Bolam’s help.

“Erica just told me to keep Christie calm,” he told 7News.

“We wouldnt be able to do it without Erica and QAS, brilliant job.”
