Man reportedly beaten, dumped and left to die identified

A tattooed man found lying dead in the middle of a Sydney road with head injuries has been identified as Fred Dib.

The 45-year-old was weeks away from being sentenced for an aggravated break-in, stalking and intimidation charge.

Police believe Mr Dib's head injuries were not caused by a car.

Officers are reportedly investigating possible bikie links.

A 58-year-old motorist apparently hit on Alfords Point Rd at Illawong, south of Sydney, on Tuesday morning.

Dib appears to have been hit by a car after he was reportedly dumped from a vehicle.

He was found with head, stomach and leg injuries.

"Initial assessment was the head injuries were not consistent with being caused by a motor vehicle accident," Superintendent Julian Griffiths told reporters.

Mr Dib was rushed to St George Hospital, where he later died.

The initial call to police came through as a shooting or stabbing but detectives don't believe the man's injuries are consistent with either.

The driver of the white Holden Commodore that hit the man was questioned by detectives but police stressed he is only a witness.

Asked if police were looking at whether the man was assaulted elsewhere and dumped on the road, Supt Griffiths said "all those lines of inquiry are very much open".

"The only thing at this stage we are not investigating is the use of a firearm," he said.

The man was found on a usually busy stretch of road, lined by bushes, trees and, in parts, a fence.
