Firefighters remain at Perth blaze, 370 hectares destroyed

About 60 firefighters remain at a bushfire in Perth's northern-eastern suburbs that threatened properties and has burned 370 hectares of bushland.

An emergency warning was issued for parts of Brabham and Henley Brook in the City of Swan but was downgraded to an alert just after 8:30pm (AWST) on Sunday night.

A fire front of three kilometres by two kilometres is still burning.

The fire is under control and is now contained but there are still hot spots within the fire ground and there is still smoke in the area.

It has so far burnt 370 hectares in Whiteman Park.

Residents have been warned to stay alert and keep up to date in case the situation changes.

The fire was reported yesterday and firefighters said they were hoping milder temperatures today would help them extinguish the blaze.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) spokesman Ryan Murray yesterday said the fire turned away from homes during Sunday evening, and had since been heading in a north-easterly direction.

No properties were lost in the fire, but a new housing estate was evacuated yesterday as flames up to 15 metres high came close.

"I would estimate there might've been about 20 properties under threat at one stage," North Coast Metropolitan Superintendent Allan Riley said.

Roads in the area were closed and motorists were asked to avoid the area due to the amount of smoke in the air.

An evacuation centre was set up at the Altone Park Recreation Centre, but residents have now been allowed to return to their homes.

Lord Street remains closed between Yuledean Road and Henley Drive, and Whiteman Park is closed for the day.

Staff from the State Emergency Service, Department of Parks and Wildlife, Western Power, WA police and St John Ambulance remain at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known.
