New laws allow more filming in NSW courts

More judgments and sentences in the NSW criminal courts will be broadcast after new laws were passed by state parliament.

Attorney-General Brad Hazzard said NSW was the first state in the country to have a presumption in favour of filming final court proceedings.

"We want the community to have confidence in the justice system, so it is important we demystify the court process by allowing cameras inside the courtroom," he said after the upper house passed the laws on Wednesday.

"(The laws will) make filming the norm rather than the exception."

The laws apply to final proceedings in criminal cases and judgments in civil cases in NSW's Supreme and District courts, with some exceptions.

Filming of jurors, protected witnesses or victims remains forbidden.
