Vic MP Shaw facing expulsion

VICTORIAN MP GEOFF SHAW:

  • Liberal-turned-independent Frankston MP


  • Holds balance of power in Legislative Assembly


  • Misused parliamentary car and fuel card for hardware business


  • Found by privileges committee to have breached MP code of conduct


  • Repaid $6838.44 as required


  • Suspended 11 sitting days until September 2


  • Had to offer genuine apology to parliament by then or face expulsion


  • Told parliament he "humbly and sincerely apologised"


  • Then told media the apology process was a "political farce"


  • Faces government expulsion motion on Thursday


  • If expelled will lose $35,000 resettlement payment


  • No by-election, but he can recontest the November 29 election


  • Labor opposition had tried to expel Shaw but failed


  • Dishonesty charges over misuse dropped in December


  • Last MP expelled from Victorian parliament was in 1901.
